OneWorld Now! (OWN) is an educational nonprofit with almost 20 years of experience providing language instruction, leadership development, and study abroad opportunities to primarily low-income youth of color in the Seattle area and across the country through online programs.

As part of our year-long school program, students can earn high school world language credit by studying Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, or Russian. They can also opt to participate in Leadership workshops and apply to study abroad in South Korea, Morocco, or Russia.

About the Role

OneWorld Now! is seeking an energetic, organized, and dedicated individual to join our program staff as a part-time in-person Arabic Instructor for the second half of the 2021-2022 academic year (January – June 2022). Note that OneWorld Now teaches Modern Standard Arabic.

This class is being taught in partnership with Denny Middle School and Seattle Public Schools. Note that a teaching license is not required for this position.

Whether you are a native, heritage, or second language speaker of Arabic, this is a chance to share the language and culture you love with middle and high school students. 

Minimum requirements:

  • Native, heritage, or second-language proficiency in Arabic (Advanced Low or higher on the ACTFL proficiency scale)
  • Professional working proficiency in English
  • Experience teaching Arabic or another subject to middle school or high school students in the United States
  • Experience with communicative teaching methods
  • Interest in working with youth from diverse backgrounds, especially marginalized backgrounds
  • Commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive classroom environment
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and openness to feedback, learning, and growth
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work legally in the United States without organizational sponsorship
  • Ability to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 by start date (except in cases of medical exemption)

Preferred characteristics:

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Experience working with non-heritage learners of Arabic
  • Experience teaching in a U.S. public school
  • Familiarity with national best practices in language pedagogy
  • Ability to work independently or with a team as necessary
  • Experience working with racially and economically diverse groups and marginalized communities, including immigrants and refugees, communities of color, working class communities, and LGBTQ+ populations

Duties:

  • Teach one section of Arabic 1 and one section of Arabic 2 at Denny International Middle School as part of their partnership with OneWorld Now!
  • Take attendance and perform other administrative functions associated with teaching
  • Manage classroom behavior and communicate with school administration, OneWorld Now! staff, and students’ families as necessary 
  • Ensure student success by tracking student performance and following up with students as needed on missing assignments, classroom issues, etc
  • Attend OneWorld Now! teachers’ meetings as scheduled twice per month
  • Check in with the OneWorld Now! Director of Languages at least once per month, or more often as needed
  • Opportunities to take on additional hours or responsibilities if available and interested

Compensation: $30-$35/hour DOE for teaching, plus 1.5 hour of paid planning time per class per day (including lesson prep, grading, communication with students/families/school, etc.)

Hours: Classes are 7:55am – 9:45am Pacific Time Mondays through Fridays from January to June 2022; meetings as scheduled. The classes follow the vacation schedule of Seattle Public Schools.

Location: Denny International Middle School in West Seattle (2601 SW Kenyon St, Seattle, WA 98106). Applicants must be located in the greater Seattle area.
