Position: Part-time Community Engagement & Recruitment Coordinator

OneWorld Now! (OWN) is an educational nonprofit with almost 20 years of experience providing language instruction, leadership development, and study abroad opportunities to primarily low-income youth of color in the Seattle area – and across the country through online programs.

As part of our year-long after-school program, students can earn high school world language credit by studying Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, or Russian twice a week. They can also opt to participate in twice monthly Leadership workshops and apply to study abroad in South Korea, Morocco, or Russia.

About the Role

OneWorld Now! is seeking an energetic, organized, and dedicated individual to join our program staff as a part-time Community Engagement & Recruitment Coordinator. This new position will enable us to be more responsive to student and family needs, while also helping us reach more students who may not know about our programs. Minimum requirements:
  • Understand the importance of youth development work in creating positive social change
  • Passionate commitment to racial, social, and economic justice; familiarity with or interest in frameworks of social justice education and anti-racism work
  • Familiarity with or experience working with the diverse communities of the Puget Sound region, especially racially and economically marginalized communities
  • Willing and able to use flexible and culturally relevant strategies to reach out to communities and individuals with differing communication styles and needs
  • Committed to creating an equitable and inclusive youth program and office environment
  • Experience performing administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings, booking rooms, coordinating schedules, and using spreadsheets to track event or program registration
  • Detail-oriented
  • Adaptable and open to feedback, learning, and growth
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to honor relationships with school partners through respectful communication and punctuality for events
  • Able to work legally in the United States without organizational sponsorship
  • Able to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 by start date (except in cases of medical exemption)
  • Able to perform in-person, on-site presentations and lead meetings at school locations across Seattle
Preferred characteristics:

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Experience with recruiting youth for programming using online and in-person strategies, including presentations to large groups
  • Experience working with youth or families from economically and/or racially marginalized backgrounds
  • Experience working with public schools
  • Ability and willingness to communicate at the intermediate level or above in Somali, Amharic, Vietnamese, Cantonese, or another language commonly spoken among immigrant communities in the Puget Sound region
  • Strong understanding of the issues facing families who primarily speak a language other than English in the Puget Sound region and ideas about how to create accessible materials for them
  • A track record of administrative work that demonstrates the ability to manage detail-oriented tasks
  • Ability to communicate in one of the OneWorld Now! languages (Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, Korean) and/or experience living or working in a country that speaks one of these languages is not strictly required to perform the job duties, but would be considered a plus
Duties:
  • Coordinate recruitment efforts, including but not limited to: creating recruitment materials, corresponding with local teachers and administrative staff to schedule school visits, and booking spaces for info sessions
  • Visit local schools to give 5–10-minute classroom presentations about OWN programs, table afterschool and/or at lunchtime, and lead family info sessions
  • Collect information from and follow up with prospective students via email and text messages
  • Support registration and enrollment process for afterschool and summer programs as needed
  • Reach out to families of absent students with phone calls, text messages, and/or emails
  • Contact students and families to discuss and resolve student issues
  • Build relationships with students and families to identify student needs and potential future programming
  • Create and implement strategies to engage parents, guardians, and other family members of current students more closely in OneWorld Now! programming
  • Develop and implement strategies to make sure that families of students who primarily speak a language other than English can access important OneWorld Now! communications
  • Support OneWorld Now!’s school partnerships through building relationships with teachers, administrators, and other school-based nonprofit partners; maintain these relationships with reliable communication and timely follow-up
  • Develop mutually-beneficial relationships with other youth development organizations to better serve the youth of our region
  • Collaborate with all staff to undo institutional and structural racism through ongoing collective training, education, and self-reflection
  • Serve as an excellent ambassador for OneWorld Now! at all times both formally and informally
  • Participate in staff meetings and retreats
  • Perform other administrative duties that assist in the smooth running of OneWorld Now! programming
Hours

This is a 0.5 FTE position, averaging 20 hours/week. Daily schedule may be agreed upon with the Executive Director upon hiring, but must accommodate daily attendance follow-up, a required weekly all-staff meeting, and a required bi-weekly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion conversation for all staff. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support events or connect with families.

Compensation

Starting salary range is $22,000-$24,000 annually depending on experience. Generous benefits package with health insurance (medical, dental, and vision, with a 50% employer contribution), retirement, and paid time off policy.

Location

610 Maynard Ave S, Seattle WA 98104. Applicants must be based in the greater Seattle area.

Position: Part-time Virtual Korean Instructor

About the Role

OneWorld Now! is seeking an energetic, organized, and dedicated individual to join our program staff as a part-time virtual Korean Instructor for academic year 2021-22 (October – June). Whether you are a native, heritage, or second language speaker of Korean, this is a chance to share the language and culture you love with middle and high school students.

Minimum requirements
  • Native, heritage, or second-language proficiency in Korean (Advanced Low or higher on the ACTFL proficiency scale)
  • Professional working proficiency in English
  • Experience teaching Korean or another subject to young adults, youth, or children in the United States
  • Experience with communicative teaching methods
  • Interest in working with youth from diverse backgrounds, especially marginalized backgrounds
  • Commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive classroom environment
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and openness to feedback, learning, and growth
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work legally in the United States without organizational sponsorship
Preferred characteristics

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following characteristics:

  • Experience teaching in the United States (Korean or another subject)
  • Experience working with non-heritage learners of Korean
  • Experience working with high school students in the United States
  • Familiarity with national best practices in language pedagogy
  • Ability to work independently or with a team as necessary
  • Experience working with racially and economically diverse groups and marginalized communities, including immigrants and refugees, communities of color, working class communities, and LGBTQ+ populations
Duties
  • Teach two sections of Korean 2 and one section of Korean 1 online
  • Take attendance and perform other administrative functions associated with teaching
  • Ensure student success by tracking student performance and following up with students as needed on missing assignments, classroom issues, and so on
  • Attend OneWorld Now! teachers’ meetings as scheduled once per month
  • Check in with the OneWorld Now! Language Program Manager at least once per month
  • May have the opportunity to work on developing a Korean 3 curriculum
Compensation

$30-$35/hour DOE for teaching, plus 1 hour of paid planning time per class per day.

Hours

4:30pm – 7:45pm Pacific Time Mondays and Wednesdays and 4:30pm – 6pm Pacific Time Tuesdays and Thursdays; meetings as scheduled.

Location

Virtual; candidate may be located anywhere in the United States (though being located in the greater Seattle area is a plus) and must have US work authorization.
