Muralist for Global Leadership Program Volunteer Project

OneWorld Now! is an after-school language and global leadership program for high school students in the greater Seattle area.  Our vision is that all young people have access to life-changing international education. We seek an independent, organized, and dedicated individual to lead a Mural painting project in the International District/Chinatown area.

Commitment: Work with OneWorld Now! staff and students on agreed-upon days in April and May to re-paint a historic Chinatown/International District mural (approximately 70 ft. by 8 ft.) which was previously destroyed by graffiti and painted over.  The artist’s responsibility is to create a supply list for the mural, with supplies to be purchased by OneWorld Now; outline the mural using original designs and a projection system; work with a group of high school volunteers who will paint in the mural.

Compensation: a stipend of $1,000 will be awarded. Materials needed for the mural will be purchased by OneWorld Now!.

Whether you are an expert or novice muralist, this is a chance to share your art skills and collaborate with high school students with a dedicated team of staff that wants to see this project come to life.

Minimum requirements:

  •          Artist with some experience in Mural painting (completion of at least one or more Mural projects)
  •          Professional working proficiency in English
  •          Interest in engaging with high school students and staff to complete to mural
  •          Interest in working with under-served youth
  •          Excellent communication skills

Preferred characteristics:

  • The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following characteristics:
  •          Experience completing other mural projects
  •          Experience working or collaborating with high school students on volunteer projects
  •          Connection to the history of the Chinatown/International District

Duties:

  •          Assess photos of the historic mural and plan a purchase of supplies and resources to restore the mural (destroyed by graffiti and painted over). Mural is approximately 70 ft. by 8 ft.
  •          Outline the mural using the original or updated transparencies and a projection system
  •          Help direct/ facilitate students and staff in completing the painting (filling in the outline done by the artist)
  •          Communicate regularly with office staff about project

Compensation: a stipend of $1,000 will be awarded upon completion of mural. Must be authorized to work in the United States; OneWorld Now! does not sponsor visa applications or petitions.

Location: The mural is projected to be painted on one of the outside walls of the Chong Wa Benevolent Association building in International District/Chinatown.
