Summer Teaching Intern: Korean or Arabic

OneWorld Now! is an after-school language and global leadership program for racially and economically diverse youth in the Seattle area. We seek energetic, organized, and dedicated individuals to join our Korean or Arabic teaching teams at our virtual summer programs. Whether you are a native, heritage, or second language speaker of one of these languages, this is a chance to share the language and culture you love with high school students and learn from a team of experienced teachers in a highly rewarding environment. You will assist an experienced teacher in their virtual language classroom, as well as design and teach your own lessons twice per week. Work will be virtual, but there may be some opportunities for social-distanced in-person activities with students as health conditions allow.

OneWorld Now! plans to hire the following for summer 2021: One Arabic Teaching Intern and two Korean Teaching Interns. One Korean Intern will be assist in our morning class (9am – 12pm), while the other will assist in our afternoon class (3pm – 6pm).

Minimum requirements:
  • Native, heritage, or second-language proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic or Korean (intermediate-high or above)
  • Professional working proficiency in English and strong written English skills
  • Interest in learning about best practices in language pedagogy
  • Interest in supporting the growth of young people of color, youth from immigrant families, and youth from low income backgrounds
  • Commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive classroom environment
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and openness to feedback, learning, and growth
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work legally in the United States without organizational sponsorship
  • Have access to a laptop, Internet that is fast enough to run Zoom with the camera on, and a quiet room in which to work
Preferred characteristics:
  • Located in the greater Seattle area
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing education as a career path, whether in a foreign language or another field
  • Experience working with high school students in the United States, whether as a teacher or in another capacity such as tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or similar activities
  • Experience working with racially and economically diverse individuals and communities, including immigrants and refugees, communities of color, working class communities, and LGBTQ+ populations
  • Assist in the virtual language classroom at our summer camp, including by performing role-plays, working with struggling students, facilitating small-group work, and helping students stay on-task
  • Design and lead lessons twice per week that merge a cultural or extracurricular activity with language learning (examples include calligraphy, singing a relevant song, and so on)
  • Work with the language teacher to create lesson plans and teaching materials in accordance with STARTALK best practices and submit them daily to the Deputy Director
  • Assist in office hours or otherwise work with struggling students in the afternoon
  • Grade or assess student assignments

Arabic intern and Korean morning class intern: 9am-12pm Pacific Time assisting in the classroom, plus 2-3 hours prep or collaboration in the afternoon.

Korean afternoon class intern: 3pm – 6pm Pacific Time assisting in the classroom, plus 2-3 hours prep or collaboration before or after class.

Outside of your time assisting in the classroom, plan to spend 2-3 hours per weekday preparing class materials, planning a lesson you will lead, working with a struggling student, or assisting your supervising teacher in other ways.

Classes run Monday-Friday, June 28 – July 16 and July 26 – August 13. There will be a break from July 17 – July 25 during which some prep work may be necessary, but no classes will be held.

Expect to attend 5-10 hours of training in June, days and times TBD.


$3000 stipend. Must be authorized to work in the United States; OneWorld Now! does not sponsor visa applications or petitions.
