A Message from our Board President
Dear OWN Friends and Supporters,
After twelve years in Seattle as OWN’s Founder & Executive Director, Kristin Hayden has decided to pursue new opportunities and relocate to the Bay Area in September 2014. I know you will join me and other members of the OWN Board of Directors in wishing her well in her new endeavors.
Under Kristin’s direction, OneWorld Now!’s language, leadership, and study abroad programs have transformed the lives of over 3,000 underserved youth in Seattle and beyond. Many of our students are leaders in their own communities and organizations – First Lady Michelle Obama recognized a OneWorld Now! alumnus in her recent speech at Peking University addressing the importance of studying abroad for young Americans of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds. Kristin’s founding of OneWorld Now! earned her the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship. Under her tenure, OWN has also been recognized as “one of the nation’s most innovative after-school programs” by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.
Kristin’s legacy has touched many lives, and it was our mission as a board to find a new leader who will carry out this work with as much joy, leadership, and commitment as she did. The Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that Jennifer Tanaka, OWN’s former Director of Programs, will be the new Executive Director of OneWorld Now!. Jennifer just returned to the Pacific Northwest after serving for almost five years in various leadership positions with the Open Society Foundations in Budapest, Hungary. Jennifer will assume her new role at OWN this fall equipped with over 18 years of global nonprofit management experience, a deep knowledge of our organization, and passion to fulfill OWN’s mission.
We are certain that under Jennifer’s leadership, along with our dedicated staff and your continued support, OneWorld Now! and the students we serve will continue to thrive and make a difference throughout global communities.
An event celebrating Kristin Hayden and OWN’s accomplishments over the past 12 years will take place on Tuesday, September 30th, 2014 at the Century Ballroom in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Tickets and more details will be available soon! For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call (206) 223-7703.
